Clarks Hill Lake

Clarks Hill Lake ( J. Strom Thurmond Lake) is the largest U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project east of the Mississippi River and one of the largest inland bodies of water in the South.  It is the home to a variety of wildlife, including a few endangered species making Clarks Hill a paradise for nature lovers and a fisherman's dream. Bass tournaments, wake boarding competitions, camping, boating, you name it! If it's water recreation you seek, grab your sunscreen and a cooler and head out to the lake.

 


Mountain Biking

Need something to do on a beautiful Saturday afternoon? Grab your bike and hit one of Augusta's many biking trails.  Ranging from leisurely to advanced you are sure to fing something that suits you. Make sure to grab an extra bottle of water, it's humid out there on the river.

 


Augusta Canal Interpretive Center

Explore the nation's only industrial power canal still in use for its original purpose. Built in 1845 to harness the water and power of the Savannah River, the Augusta Canal offers history, recreation and unique experiences along its 8.5 miles of towpath and waterway. Enjoy the Augusta Canal on foot, by bicycle, canoe or kayak. Fish from the banks, watch for wildlife or relax on a guided tour aboard a replica canal cargo boat. Encounter the people who built the canal and learn about the progress, problems and promise of its century-and-a-half history at the Augusta Canal Interpretive Center at Enterprise Mill.

Riverwalk Augusta

The cool breeze from the Savannah River provides a perfect place for a picnic or go for a stroll under the shady trees and enjoy the the beauty of the river and the homes along the banks. Many events take place throughout the year at Riverwalk including a St. Patricks day celebration, 4th of July fireworks display and numerous happenings at the Augusta Commons.  Visit their events page to see whats comming up!

Augusta Museum of History

Established in 1937,the Augusta Museum of History is the CSRA's oldest historical agency.  They boast several awards and accreditations for their preservation and presentation of local and regional history. The site also functions as a historical research facility.

Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art

Founded in 1937 and housed in Ware's Folly (ca. 1818) and the Walker-Mackenzie Studio (ca. 1907), the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art serves as the Central Savannah River Area's only independent non-profit visualart school and gallery.  The Institute is proud to offer visual art education opportunities for students of all ages and interests.Quarterly studio classes and workshops are available in a wide range of media, from drawing and painting to photography, weaving, clay, and sculpture.

Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History

Ms. Laney started the first school in Augusta, Georgia for black boys and girls. The school opened on January 6, 1883 in the basement of the Christ Presbyterian Church then on 10 and Telfair Street with little money and only six students. The only African American Museum in the Central Savannah River Area, which opened in 1991, is a small house museum that was the former home of Miss Lucy Craft Laney.

Morris Museum of Art

The location of Morris makes it a great place to spend a few hours before taking a walk on the Riverwalk or grabbing a bite Downtown. The interior is modeled after a southern plantation style home and they boast an extensive collection of Southern art, including some beautiful Impressionist painting of the Charleston area.  They host a variety exhibitions and family activities so check out their website for a calender or events.

Fort Discovery Science Center

Fort Discovery is a popular 128,000 square foot children's science exibitition center and meseum located in downtown Augusta directly across from Riverwalk.  Featuring several galleries with over 250 interactive displays and exibits that demonstrate varuois scientific concepts. The high-wire bycycle, human gyroscope, and the space moon walk are sure to please your inner scientist....fun for the whole family.

Phinizy Swamp

Phinizy Swamp covers 1100 acres and is the home of the Southeastern Natural Sciences Academy.  They host a variety of activities to educate people about environmental issues and raise money for the research programs they run.  You can go on a 1.5 mile guided tour the first Saturday of every month to see the beautiful scenery along with the many species of animals that call Phinizy Swamp home.
